There are so many to choose from this was pretty tough to put together but here are my top 6 tropical fish types. These are all freshwater - I’ll address salt water another time…

Neon Tetra’s
The Neon Tetra has a light-blue back over a silver-white abdomen and is characterized by an iridescent blue horizontal stripe along both sides from its nose to the base of the adipose fin. It has a further iridescent red stripe that begins at the middle of the body and extends to the base of the caudal fin. Most will develop an olive green sheen lining their backs. This fish is completely transparent except for these markings. During the night, while the fish is resting, the blue and red become silver and change back when it becomes active in the morning. It grows to approximately 3 cm (1.25 in) in overall length. They are best kept in shoals of four or more.

Red tailed Shark
Red-tailed black sharks have amazing colors and can quickly become the centerpiece of your aquarium. They are territorial and hostile but can be kept in community tanks with care. They are also quite intolerant of others in their or similar species. Having said that, many of the cyprinid sharks, including the Red-Tail, can be kept in groups if the aquarium is very large, there are many hiding places, and three or more individuals are introduced together.

Elephant Nosed fish
Teh elephant nosed fish is a dark brown to black in colour, with a rear dorsal fin and anal fin of the same length and a forked tail fin. It has two stripes on its lower pendicular and its most striking feature, as you might have guessed, is a trunk-like protrusion on it’s head. This is not it’s nose, but a sensitive extension of the mouth, that it uses for self-defense, communication, navigation, and finding worms and insects to eat. Should be fed on bloodworms.

Guppies
Guppies are just great and come in many shapes and colors. While wild-type females tend to be grey in body colour, males have splashes, spots, or stripes that can be yellow, orange, blue, red, black, or even purple. Guppies are often bred for their natural color, so over the years the domestic guppy has grown weaker. As a result, guppies will sometimes die after 2-3 days after stress or pH shift. A guppy may not survive a sudden increase or drop in temperature.

Black Widow Tetra
This is an undemanding species which is great for beginners. A number of colour and long-finned varieties have been produced. They are generally peaceful community fish only occasionally nipping or being nipped.

Clown Loach
The Clown Loach has a long and laterally compressed body, with an arched dorsal and a flat ventral surface. Its head is relatively large and its mouth faces downward with thick, fleshy lips, and four pairs of barbels. Clown loaches can make a clicking sound when they are happy or angry. The body is whitish-orange to reddish-orange bands.

As for recreation, there is no shortage of options. Nature walks, horseback riding, diving, surfing - even bungy jumping and white water rafting - await the adventurous here.

This article is one of set written following our own recent experiences when choosing a holiday villa in Casares Del Sol, in Spain’s Costa Del Sol. The path to holiday home purchase abroad has many routes and along our path we have picked up some knowledge.

Specifically this discussion briefly looks at the two types of apartment purchase. My sound advice is to engage an English speaking lawyer to lead you through the purchase maze. In Spain a property lawyer is called a Notary. The law in Spain is dissimilar to other countries and at first will seem daunting and complex but you will soon pick up the process. It does make life much easier if you can talk with your Notary.

Very basically there are two types of holiday property purchases abroad. ‘On plan’ where you buy a resale or newly completed holiday property and full payment is quickly due as in a normal house purchase, and ‘Off plan’ where you buy a holiday villa still to be built or which is partially built. Payments are in stages.

In Spain ‘On plan’ deposits are usually talked about as arras, deposito, fianza, and reserve. Whilst the deposit sum is negotiable expect to pay about 10 per cent of the purchase price, the balance is paid upon completion. Check as to whether your purchase contract, contracto states plainly whether the initial deposit is to be refunded in the event of non-completion. Expect there to be conditional clauses built into a purchase contract, and are called clausulas abrogatorias.

‘Off plan’ is often the preferred option both for the vendor and vendee. From the point of view of both parties the deposit can very small, in some cases 3-4,000 Euros. There is normally a 30 day cooling off period after which time normally 20-30% of the purchase price has to be paid, minus the initial deposit. The vendor loves ‘off plan’ since it is easy to sell the dream.

Friends of ours have been privy to this poetic license happening when buying their own specific holiday properties ‘off plan’.

Example 1: The internal floor space seemed smaller when they obtained the keys than on the original specification, no less than 7 sq meters less in fact.

Example 2: The apartment block was lower down a hill than on the original plan, and consequently closer to noise and the associated dust from road traffic.

Lastly, before you decide which type of purchase is for you do plenty of research! And once you have decided on your apartment, sign up with a company that specialises in villa furnishings and get them to show you suitable villa furnishings packages that are within your budget.
